Spencer Kent is an award-winning investigative journalist based in New Jersey. He won a Toner Prize for Project Extreme, an investigation into the rise of political extremism in New Jersey. He was also a Livingston Award finalist for his reporting on a South Jersey man’s recovery from a rare and deadly flesh-eating disease that left him a quadruple amputee. He won a Sigma Delta Chi Award (circulations up to 40,000) for “The Stranger in the Mirror,” a project examining the face and double-hand transplant of a 20-year-old who had suffered life-threatening burns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he reported stories and investigations on the virus’ spread, its impact on New Jersey residents and the toll on front line workers, families of victims and survivors. He has also won several state journalism awards. Spencer is a Rutgers University graduate and fellow at The USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism.
